Discover Southern Delaware Goat Getters

At Southern Delaware Goat Getters, we believe in letting nature do the work. Our hardworking herd of goats provides an eco-friendly, efficient, and safe way to clear brush, weeds, and unwanted vegetation across Sussex County and beyond.

Instead of relying on heavy machinery or chemicals, we bring in goats — natural “brush busters” who love to munch on invasive plants, poison ivy, and overgrown thickets. The result? Clear land, healthier soil, and a greener approach to land management.

Whether you’re a homeowner with a backyard that’s gotten out of control, a farmer looking to reclaim overgrown fields, or a community group managing trails and open spaces, we’re here to help. Our goats can tackle tough terrain where machines can’t go, all while leaving behind natural fertilizer to enrich the land.

At Southern Delaware Goat Getters, we’re more than just land clearing — we’re about sustainability, stewardship, and supporting the local community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Targeted grazing is the practice of using goats and sheep like “four-legged landscapers” to focus their grazing on specific problem plants—such as poison ivy, multiflora rose, honeysuckle, kudzu, and other invasive or overgrown vegetation.

Instead of mowing everything down, targeted grazing works like a precision tool:

  • The animals are placed in a controlled, fenced area.

  • They naturally seek out and eat the exact plants you want removed.

  • Their grazing resets the vegetation without machines, chemicals, or disruption to the land.

In Delaware, targeted grazing is especially effective along wetlands, wooded edges, solar farms, retention ponds, and community open spaces where traditional equipment struggles. It’s eco-friendly, quiet, and surprisingly entertaining to watch—nature doing the work for you.

Vegetation management is the process of controlling, reducing, or reshaping plant growth to keep landscapes healthy, safe, and usable. When goats and sheep do it, it becomes a natural, sustainable alternative to weed-whackers, herbicides, and heavy machinery.

With small hooves and big appetites, goats and sheep can access tricky spots—like steep slopes, thick brush, marshy areas, and overgrown trails—that typical landscaping crews can’t safely reach.
They munch their way through invasive plants, reduce fire risk, improve visibility, and help restore habitats without soil compaction or pollution.

In Southern Delaware, vegetation management with grazing animals is a perfect fit for:

  • HOAs and community open spaces

  • State and county parks

  • Agricultural edges

  • Drainage areas and stormwater ponds

  • Solar farms

  • Vacant land or lots awaiting development

It’s landscaping that works with nature—plus, you get a flock of fuzzy workers who are always on time and always hungry.

There are many factors to determine how long a job will take. This depends on:

  • Acreage
  • Density of vegetation
  • Weather (goats are not fond of working in heavy rain or harsh weather conditions and who can blame them?)
  • Number of goats deployed
Most jobs take between 1–7 days, but larger or highly overgrown sites may take longer.

There are several factors that determine whether the goats will stay on your property at night. This includes homeowner or HOA preference and, ultimately, the safety of our herd. This will be discussed during our consultation! While on-site, a secure enclosure keeps them safe, and we check on them in-person daily and also have video surveillance for their protection and safety and check on them frequently throughout the day and night! We are on-call 24/7 in the event of any concerns or issues. They are provided with a shelter if needed, feed, and fresh water.

Yes! We are licensed and insured to provide services within the state of Delaware! We are a LLC, have a valid business license, and also have active insurance.

While we cannot guarantee that this will never happen, it is quite rare and they are easily enticed back into their enclosure. We use high-quality electric netting, that we will install, that keeps animals in and predators out. Our animals are trained to the fence and familiar with grazing setups. Escape attempts are rare. Typically, as long as the goats are in an area with enough foraging materials and are not penned in one area too long to get bored, they stay within the enclosure.

Not at all!  Once the goats are set up and secure, we handle the rest. You’ll receive updates as needed.

Yes, there will be goat poop - and that’s actually a good thing! Goat pellets break down quickly, improve soil structure, and fertilize the land naturally. Cleanup isn’t required, and the effect is minimal compared to machinery disturbance. While we will do our best to clean up any on sidewalks or high traffic areas as requested, the pellets are small, like raisins, and difficult to clean up all of it!

Please resist the urge! While they are adorable, they’re working livestock. For their safety (and yours), we ask that you observe them from outside the fence. If we are able during one of our check-ins, we may be able to assist you with visiting the goats; however, entrance into the enclosure while we are not present is not allowed due to safety and insurance reasons. With that said, we like to think we have some of the sweetest goats around!

Absolutely! Our goats are doing what goats naturally love to do—exploring, browsing, and munching on a wide variety of plants. Targeted grazing lets them express their natural behaviors in a low-stress, outdoor environment.

They have constant access to fresh water, shelter, and safe fencing, and we monitor them daily to make sure they’re healthy, comfortable, and content. Happy goats do better work—and we take their wellbeing very seriously. If there was a dream job for a goat, working for Southern Delaware Goat Getters would be it! New and engaging environments all the time, fresh snacks daily, meeting new friends, hanging with their best buds, and being taken care of by their human family who loves them and ensures their safety and wellbeing every step of the way!

Ear tags are a standard form of identification for goats and sheep. They help us keep accurate medical records, track individual animals, and meet state and federal livestock requirements.

The tagging process is quick—similar to getting your ears pierced. The goats may feel a brief pinch when the tag is applied, but once it’s in place, they don’t notice it. It does not continue to hurt them.

Afterward, the tag just becomes part of their normal daily life, and it helps us make sure each goat stays healthy, safe, and properly cared for.

Definitely not! Goats require a lot of extra nutrients that they cannot get from what they are eating on the job. We are sure to provide the goats everything that they need to stay healthy, including top-tier feed, additional roughage and minerals as needed.  We provide fresh water daily and check for potential health needs and hydration regularly throughout the job. While our goats will love to snack on your unwanted brush, goats are browsers and they will not have a full meal just by eating on the jobsite.

The goats strip leaves, vines, and brush. They reduce biomass significantly but don’t pull roots. Targeted grazing is meant to control, not permanently eliminate, vegetation without chemicals. Follow-up grazing is often recommended. With additional maintenance, the unwanted vegetation will die out as it is nibbled down and this allows for the opportunity for new growth or the planting of favorable plants and grasses. The goats also do not tend to enjoy the old, thick, bitter stickers. They eat the smaller shoots, but there are some that even goats will not touch.  This is where additional methods do come in handy to finish clearing the section, which makes it easier to maintain in the future.  The goats do a great job of clearing enough to be able to see what else needs to be removed or to reduce the foliage to see debris in the area.

This is all based on personal preference.  During your consultation, we will discuss your goals for the space and what our capabilities are. The goats will leave sticks, limbs, and some other materials, such as the very old, thick thorny vines. If you are interested in only using goats for clearing, they will do a great job and you will be able to see through the brush; however, there may still be organic materials left behind. We also offer limited land clearing options that involve lighter machinery. We do not offer tree removal services, with the exception of smaller saplings at our discretion. We are able to offer contact information for local, reputable resources for larger trees. The goats do make tree removal easier as they clear the way for the pros to get in to cut down the large trees.

Sometimes, we run into situations where there are objects that have been taken over by brush (old vehicles, trailers, boats, ladders, fences, etc). If these objects need to be removed, we can discuss this at our consultation as well. The goats can assist with clearing the way to gain a better visual of the object that needs to be removed.  We do charge extra for removal and disposal of the items at the owner's request.

In some situations, our clients are interested in keeping the logs and organic material for woodstoves, fires, etc; however, we are also able to remove the logs and limbs as well if that is preferred.

Yes! We offer the choice of annual or twice-per-season grazing to keep vegetation under control and avoid unwanted growth. The goats enjoy the younger plants when they are less bitter and easier to chew.

Absolutely. We’re fully insured and are able to provide contracts, site plans, and documentation for HOAs, public agencies, and solar/utility companies. We are happy to speak with your HOA, corporate contacts, or city/town representatives to present them with any information they might need to determine if Southern Delaware Goat Getters might be of benefit!
